Back in the spring of 1985, a group of eight recently unemployed restaurant workers decided to form a worker-owned cooperative called Casa Nueva. Those workers had never run a business before, but they collectively had over 100 years of restaurant experience…and the determination to create their own livelihoods. The Appalachian Center for Economic Networks (then Worker Owned Network) had also formed in the spring of 1985 with a goal to promote community-based economic development in the region through the formation of worker-owned businesses. With their help, Casa Nueva’s founders developed a business plan, secured financing, and created the foundation of our current cooperative structure. As the business has grown over the years, Casa Nueva has branched out beyond the restaurant. In 1987, they created their own Casa Nueva Salsa and Limited Harvest product lines. And in October 1993, they expanded to include a full service bar called the Casa Cantina. In 2003, the owners embarked on the largest expansion project in the corporation’s history: doubling the size of the Cantina and adding a second kitchen.
Throughout their history, Casa Nueva has maintained a commitment to ownership opportunities for all employees. Although Casa Nueva or “new house” isn’t so new anymore, the owners stay committed to creating “what’s new” both as a business and cooperative.

Founded in 2002 in Athens, Ohio, Intelliwave is now the largest wireless internet service provider (WISP) in Ohio. As dial-up Internet gave way to broadband, it was clear that the Southern Ohio region was largely left behind by the networks of the larger carriers. In order to bridge this digital divide, Intelliwave began constructing a wireless network throughout the region which would serve as last mile distribution of Internet service to individual residents and businesses. Their broadcasting sites include cell towers, rural water tanks and grain legs. In some cases, there may be 200 customers connecting to a tower, in other places, there may be only 10. This flexibility allows Intelliwave to go where other carriers are not able or are unwilling to go.
Intelliwave’s wireless service is different from both mobile wireless (cellular service) and satellite. Unlike mobile cellular service, Intelliwave’s service is “fixed.” What this means is that a radio is installed at your home or business that connects back to a tower sites. Once the Internet is installed to your home, you are able to use it in the same way you would use any traditional data service such as cable or DSL. The only difference is that, rather than receiving your signal from a cable buried in the ground, your signal comes through the air. Intelliwave service is different from satellite service in that it is broadcast from “terrestrial” tower locations rather than satellites. As a result, the source is much closer to your location and therefore not subject to the rain fade and disruptions often found with satellite service.
Intelliwave offers unlimited data with no usage fees or data caps. This means a lot in a time when most homes have multiple devices connecting at any one time and often streaming video. In the case of businesses located in rural areas, traditional telecom capacity is often scarce. Intelliwave engineers dedicated wireless links to businesses which can deliver capacities of up to 100Mbs. This is often many multiples of what traditional rural services can provide.
Intelliwave also differs from the larger carriers because the company is owned and operated locally in the region. As a result, there is a deep commitment to treating our customers as our neighbors and friends. It can be daunting to try to get through the phone tree of a large telephone or cable company. At Intelliwave, you will speak with someone who is right down the road and who knows that solving your issue directly affects their own success and that of the company.

Zero Waste Event Productions
The Zero Waste Program promotes the development of a zero waste economy. In a zero waste economy, product development conserves natural resources, product design leads to reuse, repair, recycling or composting, and all discards become assets that benefit the people, the planet and the local economy. We support this ideal through general education about recycling, waste assessment of homes and businesses, dumpsite clean-ups, zero waste events, and the implementation of the Athens Hocking Zero Waste Action Plan.
